The Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans, an affiliate of the Alliance for Retired Americans today honored Congresswoman Gwen Moore for scoring a perfect 100 on the Alliance’s 2012 Voting Record. The report card assesses Members of Congress on 10 House and Senate votes, which include issues of critical importance to seniors from taxes to Medicare, from Social Security to prescription drugs. Although findings reveal an alarming number of elected officials voted against current and future seniors, by scoring 100% Congresswoman Moore exhibited the courage and conviction to stand up for the best interests of older Americans. The WI Alliance, representing over 107,000 Wisconsin retirees and is a charter member of the national organization, provides public education and advocacy with and for current and future seniors on state and federal programs and issues. “We applaud Congresswoman Gwen Moore for her integrity in protecting the health and economic security of older Americans, said Mike Pyne, President of the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans. “This past session of Congress was unproductive and filled with attacks on programs vital to seniors, but Congresswoman Moore was bold enough to fight for your country’s older citizens and has earned the trust of millions of seniors by consistently demonstrating her commitment to retirees,” Pyne added.
This past year we saw far too many members of Congress once again vote for legislation that favors big corporations and the wealthiest Americans at the expense of retirees and other older Americans. The House voted for a budget plan that would gut Medicare, as we know it by turning it into a privatized voucher program.
“Congress had several opportunities to make senior-friendly changes, such as repealing the Bush tax cuts and making it easier to access generic drugs, but they blew it,” said Ed F. Coyle, the Alliance’s Executive Director. “Those who vote against seniors don’t realize this is a politically savvy voting bloc that shows up on Election Day in larger numbers than any other segment of the population. Older Americans will hold accountable those who choose special interests over seniors.”
