Congressional Black Caucus: Public Employees Deserve a Seat at Table in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal to eliminate bargaining rights for public employees is “blatantly un-American” and “jeopardizes the viability of the people during these tough economic times,”  say Reps. Emanuel Cleaver  (D-Mo.) and Gwen Moore (D-Wis.).

In a letter to Walker, Cleaver, who chairs the Congressional Black Caucus, and Moore, who represents Milwaukee in Congress, say public servants deserve a seat at the table to help solve the state’s fiscal crisis. The letter says:

Gwen Moore of the People, For the People

Of late, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-WI) has taken a lot of heat.  She’s been called vocal, among other things, for standing up for women’s health, the welfare of poor children in this country and the hardworking union workers of Wisconsin.

Moore, is the U.S. Representative for Wisconsin’s 4th congressional district.  Elected in 2005, Moore is only the second woman to be elected to Congress from Wisconsin, and the first African-American.  Prior to defeating Republican attorney Gerald Boyle by earning nearly 70% of the vote to claim her current seat in Congress, Moore spent time in the Wisconsin Assembly and the Wisconsin State Senate, where she was the first African-American to be elected to the upper chamber of the Wisconsin legislature.

Moore’s history making accomplishments are certainly laudable, particularly considering her background.  As one of nine children, and a one-time recipient of welfare, Moore went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in political science from Marquette University, despite being a single mom.

Congresswomen Electrify Planned Parenthood Abortion Debate

The House may have voted to strip Planned Parenthood of funding, but the personal stories from Gwen Moore and Jackie Speier about an unplanned pregnancy and an abortion inspired women everywhere. The two congresswomen tell Michelle Goldberg why they decided to speak out.

In the end, Reps. Gwen Moore (D-WI) and Jackie Speier (D-CA) probably didn’t sway any votes by sharing their personal stories on the House floor on Thursday night. On Friday, 240 of 241 House Republicans voted to strip Planned Parenthood, the nation’s leading provider of reproductive health care, of government funding.
