An assault on women's health

What a difference a year makes. Last year, I was at our state Capitol watching then-Gov. Jim Doyle sign the Healthy Youth Act, a much overdue law ensuring that Wisconsin youth get accurate and age-appropriate information in sex-ed classrooms.

Fast forward to today, when we are facing serious attacks on access to women’s health care at the state and federal level.

At the state level, I join the chorus of Wisconsinites outraged at the overreach of conservative politicians working to advance an extreme agenda in a Trojan horse barreling through a purported state of fiscal emergency.

Congressional Black Caucus: Public Employees Deserve a Seat at Table in Wisconsin

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s proposal to eliminate bargaining rights for public employees is “blatantly un-American” and “jeopardizes the viability of the people during these tough economic times,”  say Reps. Emanuel Cleaver  (D-Mo.) and Gwen Moore (D-Wis.).

In a letter to Walker, Cleaver, who chairs the Congressional Black Caucus, and Moore, who represents Milwaukee in Congress, say public servants deserve a seat at the table to help solve the state’s fiscal crisis. The letter says:

Gwen Moore of the People, For the People

Of late, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (D-WI) has taken a lot of heat.  She’s been called vocal, among other things, for standing up for women’s health, the welfare of poor children in this country and the hardworking union workers of Wisconsin.

Moore, is the U.S. Representative for Wisconsin’s 4th congressional district.  Elected in 2005, Moore is only the second woman to be elected to Congress from Wisconsin, and the first African-American.  Prior to defeating Republican attorney Gerald Boyle by earning nearly 70% of the vote to claim her current seat in Congress, Moore spent time in the Wisconsin Assembly and the Wisconsin State Senate, where she was the first African-American to be elected to the upper chamber of the Wisconsin legislature.

Moore’s history making accomplishments are certainly laudable, particularly considering her background.  As one of nine children, and a one-time recipient of welfare, Moore went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in political science from Marquette University, despite being a single mom.

How Rep. Jackie Speier Opened Up On Abortion And Became The Woman Of The Week

Another Power Woman in last night’s heated debate was Rep. Gwen Moore of Wisconsin. When Rep. Paul Brown of Georgia argued that because most clinics are in ethnic neighborhoods “more black babies are killed” by Planned Parenthood, she countered, “I know all about black babies. I’ve had three of them. I had the first one
